LONE WORKING IN utilities Working in the utilities industry poses many risks for your lone working staff. Home > Sectors > Utilities Lone workers in this sector are exposed to risks From gas engineers or field sales reps visiting people’s homes to service engineers maintaining supply in remote locations, lone workers in this sector face many different risks. As well as trips, slips and falls there are threats involved in working in hazardous environments, or when dealing with the public, requesting payments, working at night and travelling to appointments. Engineers work with dangerous elements or hazardous materials often for extended periods of time and on their own. Though skilled in their professions, accidents can and do happen… and in the event of an incident, lone workers may find themselves isolated when they need help the most. Employees in the utility sector are at higher risk for serious injuries and fatalities Each year in the water supply and waste sectors alone, 2% of the workforce sustain a work-related injury. This equates to around 6,000 workers injured per annum. Almost 70% of specified injuries in the water and waste sector are due to either slips, trips or falls, a fall from a height or struck by an object. The consequences of corporate health and safety failings have become even more serious thanks to new Health and Safety Guidelines that recently came into effect. “Peoplesafe really became an extension of our team.
